PBH Delivers High Value Annual Conference to Record Number of Attendees

The 2014 Consumer Connection Conference hosted more than 200 attendees at the Hilton Scottsdale Resort and Villas last month. The three day conference, held March 17-19, delivered notable speakers, business exchange appointments between supermarket and foodservice dietitians and industry members, educational sessions, various networking opportunities, and more.

The keynote speaker, Jonah Berger, engaged the conference attendees during his session focused on Crafting Contagious Ideas; a set of specific, actionable techniques for helping information spread and ideas catch on. PBH also recognized over 60 Fruits & Veggies—More Matters Role Models and Champions within the fruit and vegetable industry, public health community, and school foodservice sector, and 30 PBH Ambassadors, during a special recognition luncheon.

With the help of conference sponsors, PBH was able to bring 40 dietitians to the conference, many of whom were first-time attendees. Day one consisted of various board-level committee meetings, capped off by a reception for PBH's Board of Trustees, Sponsors, and Retailers. Days two and three were filled with informative presentations and educational sessions, the business exchange appointments, our now infamous Walkabout Market Dinner, and a closing reception.

“The 2014 PBH annual conference exceeded my expectations,” said Elizabeth Pivonka, Ph.D., R.D., President and CEO of PBH. “I and other members of the PBH staff in attendance received numerous positive comments about the agenda, the line-up of speakers, the venue and location, and the networking sessions. We are excited to extend the positive energy generated during the conference to our Celebration event, September 6 in Monterey, and when we bring supermarket dietitians to PMA's Fresh Summit in October.     New Officers and Executive Committee Members Approved by Trustees

    During PBH's Board of Trustees meeting, held during the Consumer Connection Conference, Terry Murphy, of Wakefern Food Corporation, was elected Chairman of Produce for Better Health Foundation's board of trustees. The other elected officers include:

    • Immediate Past Chair – Marty Ordman, Marketing Consultant, Formerly Dole Food Company, Inc.
    • Vice Chairman of the Board – Howard Nager, Domex Superfresh Growers
    • Secretary/Treasurer - Mark Campion, Taylor Farms

    The board of trustees also approved Howard Nager, of Domex Superfresh Growers, as the chair of the Consumer Marketing & Communications committee, and Brett Libke, of The Oppenheimer Group, as the chair of the Donor committee. Libke was also approved as a member of PBH's Executive Committee.

    PBH Donates Nutrition Education Kits to Maricopa County Head Start

    On Monday, March 17th, PBH donated fruit and vegetable nutrition education kits to eleven Maricopa County Head Start programs. Approximately 275 children received kid-friendly materials, games, recipes, meal planning guides, and activity books during the presentation at Paiute Head Start in Scottsdale, AZ.

    The fruit and vegetable nutrition education kits were offered as an option to all registrants of PBH's 2014 Annual Conference: The Consumer Connection as a way to involve the local community in Scottsdale and to help teach young children about fruit and vegetables. “Maricopa County Head Start was an ideal choice for PBH because their health and nutrition performance standards align with PBH's mission and work of helping children and adults understand the importance of eating a variety of fruit and vegetables in daily meals and snacks for their better health,” said Antoine Oakley, Manager of Public Relations and Communications for PBH.

    The fruit and vegetable nutrition education kits were sponsored by:

The materials and supplies will help the Maricopa County Head Start program meet our goals to support the health and nutrition education needs of our low-income, vulnerable children and families,” said Alecia Jackson, Maricopa County Head Start Zero to Five Program Interim Director. “We know that school readiness is greatly affected by a child's nutrition and health. This donation from Produce for Better Health Foundation will help the children learn about the importance of eating nutritious fruit and vegetables, positively impacting a their readiness for kindergarten.”

    PBH Connects Directly with Parents

    Throughout 2014 PBH will leverage a unique opportunity to connect directly with parents by participating in the Parenting Expo conference to be held in five different cities. The first conference, held in Pittsburgh, enabled PBH to interact with over 800 parents of young children, soon-to-be parents, and grandparents. Approximately 50% of the attendees, who stopped by the PBH booth, said they were familiar with the Fruits & Veggies—More Matters® logo and 30% of those familiar with the logo had also visited The four other conference locations are: Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus and Indianapolis.

    April Webinar Sets the Nutrition Record Straight on Frozen Fruits and Vegetables

    Produce for Better Health Foundation will host a FREE webinar for health professionals entitled: Taking a Fresh Look at Frozen: Setting the Nutrition Record Straight on Frozen on Wednesday, April 16th from 2 pm – 3 p.m. ET.

    While most consumers agree they should be eating more fruits and vegetables, they mistakenly consider fresh fruit and vegetables to be a healthier option than frozen produce by nearly a two-to-one margin. This webinar will share new research on the nutritional quality of fresh and frozen fruit and vegetables that can help encourage consumers to also “think frozen” when buying fruit and vegetables because of their abundant availability, ease-of-use, and their nutrition and health benefits.
